Many tasks that can be performed on PC's these days require you to close all currently running programs. For example, almost every installer asks you to close all other applications to minimize conflicts and to avoid replacing in-use files. Other high-end tasks, such as burning CD's and defragmenting or scanning hard drives can slow down or even fail when other processes 'kick in', like background programs, the screen saver or a scheduled task.
Of course, you can manually exit each program one by one, disable the screen saver… That is when SmartClose comes in! SmartClose will automatically close all running programs, disable the screen saver and halt all other processes that can interrupt without asking.
But what when you have finished the task that required you to use SmartClose and you want to restore the programs and such that were disabled by SmartClose? Restart the computer? No, because before SmartClose closes or disables anything, it will first save the current state of the system (running programs, screen saver…) to a 'system snapshot', that can later be opened and restored again by SmartClose.

Some other features of SmartClose:

Two wizards: the Close Programs wizard, for closing all the programs, and the Restore wizard, to restore a system snapshot. Both provide an intuitive and clear interface - the latest Windows 2000/XP wizard style - and assist you step by step.
Thanks to its SmartClose-technology, most programs can be properly closed, so that the program can still save its settings and return memory and resources to the system.

Sometimes if I am bored of my music collection, I like to listen online radio. There are lots of stations out there that offer lots of music genres. Let's say you like a song you hear on that online radio and want to record it. What can you do? Well, I use Streamripper. It works great with Winamp. It separates each song, adds relevant tags and does everything for you. Here is how it works:

Install Streamripper for Winamp.
Go to shoutcast.com, icecast.org, or your favourite radio station website (mine is di.fm), and click on a stream.
Depending on which Winamp version you use...
1. Winamp 2.x:
  Both the Winamp and Streamripper windows should come up. If you don't see Streamripper try clicking the SR icon in the taskbar.
2. Winamp3:
  Winamp appears, if you don't see Streamripper go to the Thinger window, scroll right in it and you should see the SR icon - click it.
The stream should be playing in Winamp, if it's not, click "Play".
On the top of Streamripper, notice it says 'Press start to rip http://something:port' etc. Click "Start" to start ripping.

If you don't have a fat pipe (cable modem/dsl, T1, etc.) you'll want to use the Streamripper "Relay server" (RLY). If you don't use this, Streamripper will make another connection to the stream you're listening to, effectively doubling your bandwidth usage. The RLY feature makes Streamripper rip the stream and send it on to Winamp.

You should also consider using the RLY option if you're listening to streams which accept only a low number of listeners, are in high demand, or if you simply don't want to 'squander' their capacity (someone else might want to listen to your favourite music).

To setup a Relay server with the plugin follow these steps:

Load your stream as usual.
Click on "Options".
Check "Create relay stream".
Click "Ok".
You'll now notice a "RLY" icon in the Streamripper window.
Start ripping the stream as normal.
Once the stream has gotten past the "buffering" stage. Click on the "RLY" icon. The Winamp Playlist should now have an entry for your relay server in its playlist, something like 'localhost:8000'.
Double click the 'localhost:8000' (or similar) in the Playlist.
Winamp will now be playing "through" Streamripper. The entry in the Playlist will probably change name to something like '[relay stream] + stream name ...'. The normal entry for the stream is no longer in use - you can remove it if you want to - it doesn't matter.
